IHRO Condemns Honour Killings in Nawabshah as a Grave Violation of Human Rights

The International Human Rights Observer (IHRO) strongly condemns the brutal killing of two girls in Nawabshah by their brother in the name of so-called ‘honour’. This heinous act, which took place just one hour ago, reflects the deeply ingrained gender-based violence that continues to plague society. According to the mother of the accused, the girls were drugged before being electrocuted while they slept. The brother, showing no remorse, threatened to kill his mother and sister-in-law when they attempted to intervene.

The bodies of the victims have been sent to People’s Medical Hospital for post-mortem, while local authorities have swiftly arrested the perpetrator and registered a First Information Report (FIR) against him. However, such swift actions must be complemented by sustained efforts to eradicate the culture of impunity surrounding honour-based violence.

IHRO views this incident as a severe violation of human rights, underscoring the urgent need for stronger laws and effective enforcement mechanisms to protect women. The case highlights the broader context of rising gender-based crimes in Sindh, with the Hari Welfare Association (HWA) reporting 63 honour killings among 837 crimes against women in the first half of 2024. These statistics reflect a disturbing trend of violence, including murder, rape, domestic abuse, and forced marriages, which disproportionately affects women in the region.

IHRO calls upon the government and law enforcement agencies to expedite justice for the victims and ensure the protection of vulnerable women. It is imperative that societal norms perpetuating violence in the name of ‘honour’ are eradicated through legal reform, education, and public awareness campaigns. The slow pace of court proceedings and lack of resources for victims must also be addressed to prevent further tragedies like this from recurring.

This gruesome crime serves as a reminder that honour-based violence is not only a gross violation of human rights but a stain on society’s conscience that must be urgently addressed.
